Department of Labour is a government agency under the Ministry of Home Affairs entrusted as regulator of foreign labour through the issuance of licenses for foreign workers and support for work permit in addition to acting as a facilitator to local job seekers to be channeled to the private sector.

This department was established in 1955 in Belait District. Given the state at that time the country did not have a pool of skilled workforce specifically for the oil industry, the country has had to rely on workers – specifically migrant workers. The first was Commissioner of Labour was His Excellency, Mr Petherick DB and the office was centred in Belait District.
